Engaging the Community: Highlights from the Belmont & Gilesgate Neighbourhood Plan Meeting – 9 April 2024

The recent meeting of the Belmont & Gilesgate Neighbourhood Plan Working Group (NPWG) brought together community representatives to discuss community engagement around our Neighbourhood Plan. Here are the key takeaways from the meeting:

  1. Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs): The group confirmed submissions on Local Nature Recovery Strategy, Solar panels, and Housing Need as part of Durham County Council consultations
  2. Upcoming Public Meeting: Scheduled for 10th June at 7 pm in Belmont Community Centre, this meeting aims to involve the broader community in the development of our plan, focussing on topics surrounding housing need.
  3. NP Newsletter: With newsletters dispatched to GRA households ahead of the AGM on 27th April, community members are informed about ongoing developments and opportunities for involvement in shaping the neighbourhood’s future.
  4. Distribution Strategy: Distribution of newsletters in the parish area is set for May, ensuring widespread access to information and encouraging participation in upcoming events.
  5. Agenda for the Public Meeting: The meeting will prioritize discussions on the Housing theme, focusing on insights gleaned from the Housing Needs Assessment report by AECOM. This includes considerations on tenure, affordability, housing types, specialised housing for older people and houses in multiple occupation (HMOs).
  6. Engagement Format: Structured discussions will encourage attendees to share their views on various housing aspects, ensuring that community input informs decision-making processes.
  7. Other Business: The Belmont Parish Council (BPC) is considering establishing a reserve fund for the Neighbourhood Plan, underlining their commitment to long-term planning and sustainability.
